dicatator

Media Forms: How does the extract use media language to establish the programme’s genre?

The programme is a comedy so they use media language by introducing him and also the way he answers questions is funny. He also says ‘Death to the West’ and from that you can tell he is being funny and it is a comedy movie. Because he is in a western country when saying that phrase, and it is ironic. Also because of his costume you can tell it is a comedy because he is over dressed and he is wearing an army uniform to an award show. He also speaks very loud when he is being interviewed and he is joking with the interviewee. He spills ashes on the interviewee and gets dragged away by the security guards and from that you know that the film is comedy and this extract is for humour.

-      Media Representations: How is ethnicity represented in the extract?

Ethnicity is represented in the extract by the words the dictator uses and from the start his name gives an idea. It is a stereotype of Middle Eastern people and also the way they speak with the accent. He also tries to mock them with them being control freaks and dictators like most Middle Eastern leaders. He also jokes by making females his body guards and doing what he wants; therefore fulfilling the movies name ‘the dictator’. The film is inspired by Gaddafi and is based on him a little. It is also border line racist because of the things which are said in the movie but in this extract he doesn’t represent the characters ethnicity much.

-      Media Institutions: In what ways is the extract typical of the Hollywood film industry?

It is a typical Hollywood film because the interview is on the red carpet, and the dictator is being interviewed by a journalist asking him questions about the film. Also Hollywood movies make it to the Oscars and the dictator must have been a successful film to make it there. There are a lot of cameras and the lights are bright therefore creating attention to the carpet. Although the dictator was the main star on the red carpet because, of his antics when he was being interviewed. When the interviewee is being introduced in the news, the mention the film dictator and the hit blockbuster it is.

-      Media Audiences: In what ways does the extract promote film to audiences?

The content of the interview because he talks about scenarios in the movie, and the audience would need to watch the film to understand what the dictator is talking about and what he means. It also promotes through the comedy and controversy that goes through the interview. Because he gets dragged by the security guards, he spills ashes on the interviewee as well. This makes the audience more interested and wonder what he does in the movie. He doesn’t follow rules and is rebellious so that creates humour as well, something the audience looks forward to.

call of duty

Call of Duty video game trailer
  • Media Forms: What codes and conventions does the trailer use to establish the text’s genre?
The genre of call of duty trailer is a action as you can see the trailer feature many props like the explosions,  guns, the blood, cars blowing up and the bombs which all creates a mood and set the genre of the trailer. With all of these convention creates a mood for the audience with the icon and the setting show how all of this come together to show this genre. The trailer use lot of POV shot to show the audience how to play and what they’ll see but however it also creates show a way on how war is in real life, it not bird eye view or long shot, it’s a point of view shot and create a mood and setting for the audience like there are in a war zone. Another code and convention is that the soldiers running about and stay together like it was a real war zone battle field, also the clothes and helmets look very real, so it show a lot of realism.

  • Media Representations: How is war represented in the trailer?
It represents the modern war and what technologies they use in war. The trailer has a negative and bad representation of war as it show war as a dangerous and gruesome place to be, as we see many soldiers die, blood squashing out, bombs, guns, everyone shooting, having a tensed mood and dangerous places, by doing this it will show the audience on how soldiers live out there and what they have to do and a idea on what war is like. As a result, could create more people to buy guns and act violence at people in real life.
  • Media Institutions: In what ways is the trailer typical of the video game industry?
The video game trailer is a typical of one in the industry as the trailer has many affects, animations and graphic within the trailer, in the trailer there is fast pace and loud music which engage the audience to look at and watch the trailer as it keep you going. Also the voice over of the main character and the narrators it’s very effective because normal with voice over there a background story to it, so it the audience going and still with the trailer.  The audience would be more interested in finding out about what the game would be like, therefore by showing the different elements in this trailer would keep them engaged and entertained.
  • Media Audiences: Who does this text appeal to and what pleasures does it offer?

This game will appeal to males between the ages of 14 – 30 years old, because boys mainly enjoy playing these types of war and action games with others, by themselves and online. Although this game is for 18 and over they would still get someone to purchase the game for them .The call of duty trailer mostly appeal to teenagers and young adults via the convention which feature in the trailer like the violence, guns, the blood and the strong language, and these are the different types of thing that teenagers like an appeal from. For the demographic and psychographic class, this trailer will fall in to the group of C2, D and C1 as these people are aspires as they want to follow and be in those footsteps, they are not leader, they do what everyone doing, also the Xbox console cost a lot of money to buy so not many people can afford to buy the console, especially the people in the E group for demographic.

Guardian News Advert

Guardian News Advert

Media Forms: What techniques does the ad use to persuade the audience to consume the Guardian?
They update the stories very quickly and they tell the stories accurately, which shows they are a good newspapers. Also they distribute the news in many different forms for example tablets, pads and phones. It is a quick way to read the news and be updated with current affairs. Also the audience can be updated while they’re on the move and easy to access.
Also the newspaper is updated each bit of the story and they update the public everything that is happening and any changes which are currently happening. The Guardian is with the story every step of the way.

Representation: How is the news represented in the ad?

They are represented as very reliable and consistent with their information, they follow the story every step of the way. Also it is represented as modern because of people using social networking sites to interact about the newspaper articles.
The guardian newspaper also makes people have opinions on the story and tweet their views, the audience can tweet the article as well so other people can also see. Also people can have views and they can be changed by the newspaper giving them information. They can also create a revolt within the people because they manipulate the public’s information.

Media Institution: What issues of new technology does this ad raise and what does it tell us about the values of The Guardian?

The news paper is represented as how new technology has shown people views and opinion, as more people can use their computer and their smart phone to access newspaper articles and keep up to date with the current affairs. This is effective in showing that technology has become more modern and advanced over the years. With doing this it creates a viral spends to everyone around and it very fast for people to get this information and views from people. The issues Is that technology is now up to date and modern as many people have the internet on their phones, so it more advance and popular for many people. People can also use social networking sites to interact about the articles the guardian posts.

Audience: On the basis of this ad, who does the Guardian brand appeal to?

It appeals to intelligent and educated people because they would go out their way to read the news. Also they want to be updated with all the news, because it could affect their life. I would also say people which are up to date with technology and social networking. Because the audience uses tablets and social networking sites to read and interact about the articles the guardian posts.

Cover work i newspapers

Media Forms
how does the text both subvert and reinforce the typical conventions for a newspaper front page? (12 marks)

This is a typical newspaper because it has main story at the front and has bullet points of other stories in the newspaper. They also have some pictures of the other features in the newspaper like the sport which is at the back. Also they have a cross word which most newspapers have so this keeps it traditional and reinforces the typical convention for a newspaper.

The ‘i’ newspaper also subverts from a typical newspaper because they have a title that says the newspaper of the year at the top in red. It also has the price at the top left corner of the newspaper and this isn’t usually on newspapers, so this makes it unique from the traditional newspaper. Also the font colour is different colours for the main title and they are trying to get a British feel to the story. This is also something different and the ‘I’ and the sun would do, other newspapers fonts are generally black. It is laid out more like a magazine than a newspaper because of the little pictures of each story.

Media Institutions
Why might the ‘i’ newspaper have been successful in a newspaper industry that has generally been in decline? (12 marks)

The ‘i’ newspaper has been successful because the public feel engaged with the ‘i’ newspaper than the other newspapers. This is why they make a lot of sales and also the price they sell the paper for is very reasonable. Also majority of the UK is white British, so for that reason they are the target audience it appeals to. They purchase the newspaper because it is about mainly about Britain and stories related to it.

Media Audiences
what would you expect the ‘i’ newspaper’s target audience to be based on this front page? (12 marks)

I would expect the target audience to be British and white because of the newspapers articles and it doesn’t have multicultural stories. Also everybody on the front page is white and British, so for that reason they are the target audience.

I would expect the target audience to also be educated because of the stories that featured on the front page.  They aren’t gossip stories or about celebrities but it relates to the UK.  And the current affairs which are going on right now, educated people would want to be updated with this information.

Media Representations
how is Britain represented in this text? (12 marks)

British people are represented as patriotic because thousands of people turned up to Buckingham palace for the queen’s jubilee. Also there were pictures of street parties of people celebrating the jubilee and they’re wearing royal family masks. The main story is the queen’s diamond jubilee and it shows how patriotic Britain is because the royal family is still important to them. Also the next stories underneath the ‘thousands attend Buckingham palace jubilee gig’ are still related to Britain and it doesn’t mention any other story.

Every single article on the front page is related to Britain and this represents Britain as very proud of themselves and what they have. For example Andy Murray in the sport and also the England Football and this is only British sport. Also at the top the other articles are related to Britain and it doesn’t mention other countries outside it.

Print, broadcast the amazing spiderman

The amazing Spider Man

Broadcast:

They ask Andrew Garfield how he feels playing spider man, and also what he thinks of spider man. He says he used to read the comics and  he wished spider man was a real super hero when he was younger. Because he used to get bullied and spider man would save him, so he used to read the comics. They also speak to Rhys Ifans and he plays the Lizard in the movie. They ask him how he got into acting and also what it takes to play the Lizard. He says when he got the call to play the role; he never took time to answer because spider man comics were also part of his childhood. He says playing the villain is fun and he has to get into character to be evil. Because he isn’t like that usually, although he enjoyed playing the role.

Print:

Spider man is compared to other movies and their performance on the first night, Spider man was the most successful out of them in 2012. It was also one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 even though it was a remake.
The amazing spider man movie had a positive reaction in the UK, people were waiting for this movie and they were excited. It made the second highest opening after avengers. And these two movies were compared a lot and are both comic book movies. Although Avengers made a better opening and also had more people talking about it more.
But people were excited about spider man but not as much as the avengers. The amazing Spider man made £ 11,091,972 in the first year from 552 places and it shows how successful the movie was in the UK.

learning response. essay

Learning response: I need to cover all three platforms. write 2 paragraphs covering print.
WWW: Clearly written, covering a range of example.

Level 3:
- sound understanding of media ideas/issue/theories/debates.
- Evidence of all 3 platforms (print, broadcast, e-media).

The print part of ill manors is a guardian article where

Also, the main image is of the protagonist Aaron (played by Riz Ahmed) who looks serious which is highlighted, through his facial expressions as he holds the gun in a forceful way, looking straight into the mirror. The semi-naked image of the protagonist would appeal to the female audience as well as homosexual individuals as well, which could make them want to watch the film. Furthermore, the iconography of the gun is effective in highlighting the genre of the film which is urban teen drama. This is because; a gun symbolizes violence death, blood, freedom, power ect suggesting the film will include elements of each one. Furthermore, the typography of 'Ill Manors' is in a bold and striking red front which is effective, as it makes it clear for the audience to read the film name. Additionally, below the title of the film name in a small italic black font it states "Plan's B, Plan's B: become a movie director" self-explanatory as the audience would clearly know who directed the film. Furthermore, the empire magazine is mainly informing the audience about the film therefore, it does not focus on Plan B social background compared to other print media's which do. The demographics associated with this specialist magazine would be A,B,C1 therefore, targeting more middle class individuals.

Quotes
Gwen Stacy: You're a wanted man, Peter Parker.

That’s saying a lot, given how cautiously optimistic I’ve been so far about the Spidey re-boot. After all, the last of the Tobey Maguire/Sam Raimi films hit theatres just five years ago, and while “Spider-Man 3” wasn’t as beloved by fans or critics as the first two films, it still made over $800 million worldwide. Not to mention the fact that the first “Spider-Man” film is just 10 years old, so isn’t it too soon to tell the origin story all over again?

Similarly, it’s fun to see Garfield playing a version of Peter Parker that feels truer to the character so many comic book readers have fallen in love with over the years – be it his mad science skills, trash-talking his foes when he dons the Spidey costume, or seeming more like a genuine modern-day teenager when spending time with his girl Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and her family.

Similarities and differences

There aren't many similarities apart from the people that had a big part to play in both the movies. Stan lee (spider man) and Plan B (ill manors) starred in the movie both playing a small cameo role. They both had websites created and related to the movie and this got an inside view on the movie. Also they use social networking sites to communicate to fans and also update them about the films on goings. They can also communicate to the actors and ask them any questions they have and that.

The difference is that spider man has a bigger budget than ill manor, so they could get the best actors available. Also this meant the trailer and promotion of the movie was better than ill manors because they had more money to spend. Spider man could also spend more money on the settings and the places it was set such as New York. Whereas ill manors were set in a suburb in London and they couldn't set it in a better place because of their budget.

4. Go to the official website of your film. Analyse it. What different features does it contain? How does it try to engage the audience?

5. Embed the official trailer on your blog. Analyse it. Consider the Media Language used and how it would appeal to audiences.

What institutional issues are raised in the case study?

What institutional issues are raised in the case study?

The film was funded through Film London Microwave, BBC Films, Creative Skillset, Aimimage Production and Gunslinger Film (Co-Production).  Film London the capital film and media agency. Film London is one of nine regional screen agencies throughout the UK. Ill manors is the 5th film to be released through Film London Micro-wave; the successful training into production scheme. Microwave is in partnership with BBC Films and supported by Creative Skillset. Also, Film London Microwave provides:
Production Funding, Bespoke training and mentoring, Professional development, Support from script to screen

BBC Films - is the film-making arm of the BBC. It has produced or co-produced some of the most successful British films of recent years.

Ben Drew (Plan B) promoted the film Ill manors by himself. The way he promoted his film was by promoting his single and performing it live for the public notice. On 11 May 2012, Ben Drew (Plan B) premiered the album tracks "Lost My Way" and "Deepest Shame" during a performance on Later with Jools Holland. The official studio version of "Lost My Way" received its first play on BBC Radio 1 on 23 May 2012. It was made available in the form of a lyric video on Youtube later that same evening. On 13 June 2012, Drew performed a live session in the BBC Radio 1Live Lounge.

-How do they use each platform to reach their target audience (now fragmented)?
  • Print media

  • Broadcast media (TV/Radio/DVD)

  • E-Media
They use social networking sites when they are targeting young people and teenagers because they use that medium a lot. Also it is the easiest way to communicate to them

How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?

How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?

The people that are used to communicate and interact with the audience are the characters from the film. This is because the characters are meant to make them understand what they are doing in their role in the film. The places that would be used are areas where there are council house as this would be back the concept that the real life events that happen. The ideas that are used in the film is to bring back the concept of why the riots happened and what are the reasons these council estate kids are who they are, also why there actions are what they are. This would be because of the lack of opportunities and also lack of a father figure in life who plan b wants to be to the kids out there, which he plans to do through Ill Manors.

The audience are given a chance to represent themselves in ways such as e-media, for example twitter. The audience are able to leave comments on the Ill Manors twitter page expressing what they think of the film and also what they think of the characters. This would benefit Ill Manors as they would receive feedback on what they could do better next time, therefore being able to improve on the next movie created by the director.

Now think of how the film communicates with the audience across three platforms

The print ad and e-media both represent their main characters on their page. They would mostly how their stars that have the biggest part in the film. This would be done as it would connote to the audience the importance of the character in the film and also, for the audience who have not seen the film before this would make them think what this characters role in the film is. Also what is this characters relationship with the other characters also what their role is in the movie?

The kind of audience that would watch this film would be ages from 16-35, this is because the film is rated 16 therefore would appeal to these ages, also this film would appeal to this ages as, the issues in the film would interest these people as they would be the ages that would be able to understand the matter. The race wouldn’t be pacific as this film would appeal to all races as the issues that happen in the film relate to all ages. The gender I believe would be more male than female as they would be able to understand the issues better as some of them would be in the same issue and nearly all of them would know someone who faces this issue.

The place where Ill Manors would be set would be London as, the character inside the film would be from there, and therefore in order to bring up the issue of the film they would need to base the setting of the film inside of London. Also the viewers would mostly be from London as they would understand the issue of the film better as they would be around this sort of life therefore will understand and be able to relate to the issues that are on display. The viewers of this would be in the D/E category as, most of the viewers would be still in school and have not finished education yet. However A/B category would also watch this film as; the issues that are in this film would interest them. Also they get to see a different type of lifestyle and they can get a better understanding.

How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?

How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?

The target audience would be a variety of people because Plan B is trying to make upper class and educated people understand what is happening. Also politicians to make them realise what is happening and what they could do to support those families. Also it the victims could be the audience to make them know that they aren’t alone and that many people in the country suffers and need support. And they could help themselves after the government gives them some support. Also young people which are in this situation and he is saying that they can amount to anything they want. Because he has been successful and he is willing to help out young people that are into music and are troubled, so they understand the positives. And he is giving them a future other than crime and they should think positive. I know this because of what Plan B says in his lecture and the points he makes are for those individuals, also the vocabulary he uses is mainly understood by educated words.  I think his music audience changes a little and it would be younger but an older generation would listen to it. They would listen to the lyrics closely so they understand what is happening and what he is trying to say. Also if they want to know what young people are into and what issues they have at that time. I think the psychographic groups would be reformers and struggles because of the characteristics they have. Reformers are social conscience and they care about other people, also they care about others and learn about other people’s lives.

It gives you an idea of what the movie is about and who starts in it. It also gives you a visual of the quality of the movie and you have an insight on how the movie is going to be, by seeing a short clip. It is a typical trailer because it shows the main actors in the trailer and has snippets of them acting. It also has a visual of the movie and makes the viewer understand better. It also has a location where this makes the trailer more urban and relatable to the audience. It is trying to promote that no all young people are trouble makers and only a minority are. Also the government hasn’t done anything for those young people. Instead they are making things harder by closing their community centres and not giving many job opportunities for them. And this is why they resolve to violence and trouble because they get no help.
They are distributed on YouTube and some social networking sites, so the target group that uses this media will see it. It is a good way of being in the target groups eyes and it is there for them to play easily.
Plan B uses his music to promote his movie and he uses it in the trailer. The music creates an atmosphere and creates a feeling of how the movie is going to be.
I would say the target audience is from 16-35 year olds because the characters are roughly their age so they are meant to emphasize with them. Also it is meant to educate older people about how young people live and the situations they go through. They might be going through those situations or they might have friends who are. The video has young people in it mainly and Plan B is trying to say that young people are misunderstood. It has more young black boys in the video because they are stereotyped as trouble makers by the government. And also all young people with hoodies are stereotyped as trouble makers and thieves. And the government doesn’t understand young people as well, so they choose to assume that they are bad.

How are texts in the three platforms constructed?

In a Daily Telegraph article, Plan B talks about other movies he was involved in, although he was acting in them he learnt new things and it made him want to make a movie even more. He was involved in 'Adulthood'and 'Harry Brown'

He also talks about one of his inspirations for music and were his style got inspired from. He said his mother used to send my blind granddad novels on audio tapes. And he said 'This is what I need to do, I'm going to make films for the blind, I’ll be known for doing that'.

He talks about why he done a soul album and he needed attention, people didn't listen to his music before but because of the soul album they are interested. He says“I’ve got so many songs that no one ever hears because they don’t fit my image,” he sighs, “but I just thought I could make this work.”
He’s not leaving hip hop behind either. He intends to eventually release ’Stickland Banks” second disc, ’The Ballad Of Belmarsh’, and is already in the process of combining both albums into a long-form video. He’s also developing a film drama that should go into production later in the year.
It’s called ’Ill Manors’ and is about London life at the rough end of things..

Plan B talks about how he has changed his diet and his lifestyle, he is trying to be healthier and is cutting down on the alcohol. He also changed his genre of music to rap because he feels he down the soul album to catch attention. And to widen his target audience, he also got more fans because he can meet different fan’s needs. This is affective to promote his album and film because he is getting involved in different things and not only in the music industry. This creates a buzz and more recognition for the artist.

Plan B feels that the kids in his high school are disadvantaged as the kids haven't been raised properly and no one shows them love, they feel like they're not worth anything and then they walk out of the doors of their high school, pick up the newspaper and the media's saying they're not worth anything, the media calls teenagers chavs and scum. The society read the newspaper and they believe kids are bad so when they come across a teenager they already have a preconception about them this then leads to the teenagers believing they're not worth anything. Plan B then speaks about the riots, he believes the government haven't done anything to prevent it, Plan B shows true dis like towards the government.

The movie is also promoted because of Plan B's music, the two are made into one and they are interlinked this is called synergy. So fans that listen to his music would watch the movie and vice versa because the two are linked. He said it is a big achievement for him to win a MOBO but winning two is very special. He has been nominated a few times but has never won anything but this makes him recognise that he is doing well. He knows that his hard work is being recognised and it motivates him to carry on.

Underneath the album image, there's information about the album, the release date which is important as I mentioned above, the producers which brings many fans, people who like Plan B's other albums or even what he raps about and people who are a fan of Labrinth and his music. The Label which is Atlantic which again could attract a wider audience as many people might like that label because of it's previous work.
The website speaks first about Plan B's other albums, his last album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" was a soulful, if slightly hammy, concept album, which made Ben Drew a commercial success. It then speaks about his second album which is a "compliment" to the film Ill Manors. The website explains how both the film and album tell a story of a group of young people living next to the "billion-pound Olympic village in almost indescribable depravity.

The last paragraph, where should you listen to the album? The website explains if you've been through what Plan B's been through then you shouldn't listen to it as obviously it would upset you however Plan B says how it doesn't matter because all music should make you think.

Film Media in context

How does the industry promote the film to audiences using
  • Print media?
  • Broadcast media (TV/Radio/DVD)?
  • E-Media?
Print media:

This gives Plan B good promotion because he gives the audience an insight on how hard he has worked on the movie. Also how hard he has worked on his album, also how hard he worked for his fans because he flies out to do a concert the next day. He also explains where he got inspired for his ill manors album and it was the London riots that had happened in the summer. The government just stereotyped that young people were just trouble makers but it was a different story. And they brushed it off but it is a real problem and young people have issues that need to be resolved. He also speaks his opinion on this happening in the future if the government don’t change things around. Also young people should be educated about drugs because it can get out of hand and lives can be ruined. He shows this in ill manors movie. Also the government acts like young people are enemies and they are making this country bad. Also the government alienate young people and this isn't pleasant for the relationship in the country. He also talks about potential collaborations and the people he has turned down jay-z being one. He doesn’t want people to approach people through others he wants to be spoken to directly. He doesn’t want to ride of other people success and he wants to work hard and make it big the hard way. The key issues are that it isn't instant and the audience would enjoy a visual instead of having to read it. Videos are more attractive although print shows all the details and you can go back to each bit of information. They are adapting by making links to social networking sites, also updating the information regularly and making the audience up to date.

Broadcast media:

He gets interview by Jonathon Ross and he promotes his music and movie on the show. This gets his movie more recognition because the Jonathon Ross show is popular. He mentions his new album and talks about his last album and how successful it was. Also he has changed his genre and the new album is rap based. He also mentions a link between his music and the movie and how they are synchronised. The movie is a visual for the music he makes and the message he is trying to send out, he wants the government to do more for young people and he has experienced it. It is effective in promoting his music and movie and this is synergy because they are both linked. It gives him more recognition and also more intelligent and an older audience watch the Jonathon Ross show so this expands the target audience.

Plan B then speaks about the riots, he believes the government haven't done anything to prevent it, Plan B shows true dislike towards the government.

Plan B

Audience

I would say the age group of this audience would be 16- 24 year old. Because they would eat out at these stores and they would purchase these types of products. Because they are new and cheap products so foe that reason young people would. Also they keep up with technology and modern day products. Also the music they listen to is mainstream and they try to keep up with trends. they are also quite restricted with their money because they might not have a lot of money so they cant buy the best brands.

The psychographics group would be mainstreamers and explorers because these would be the two groups young people would fit into and can relate to. Young people want to be different and try something new, so for that reason they would be explorers. Also they would be mainstream to try and fit in a group, because they copy other people. They also want to stay with the current trends in society so for that reason they are Mainstreamers.
