Film Media in context

How does the industry promote the film to audiences using
  • Print media?
  • Broadcast media (TV/Radio/DVD)?
  • E-Media?
Print media:

This gives Plan B good promotion because he gives the audience an insight on how hard he has worked on the movie. Also how hard he has worked on his album, also how hard he worked for his fans because he flies out to do a concert the next day. He also explains where he got inspired for his ill manors album and it was the London riots that had happened in the summer. The government just stereotyped that young people were just trouble makers but it was a different story. And they brushed it off but it is a real problem and young people have issues that need to be resolved. He also speaks his opinion on this happening in the future if the government don’t change things around. Also young people should be educated about drugs because it can get out of hand and lives can be ruined. He shows this in ill manors movie. Also the government acts like young people are enemies and they are making this country bad. Also the government alienate young people and this isn't pleasant for the relationship in the country. He also talks about potential collaborations and the people he has turned down jay-z being one. He doesn’t want people to approach people through others he wants to be spoken to directly. He doesn’t want to ride of other people success and he wants to work hard and make it big the hard way. The key issues are that it isn't instant and the audience would enjoy a visual instead of having to read it. Videos are more attractive although print shows all the details and you can go back to each bit of information. They are adapting by making links to social networking sites, also updating the information regularly and making the audience up to date.

Broadcast media:

He gets interview by Jonathon Ross and he promotes his music and movie on the show. This gets his movie more recognition because the Jonathon Ross show is popular. He mentions his new album and talks about his last album and how successful it was. Also he has changed his genre and the new album is rap based. He also mentions a link between his music and the movie and how they are synchronised. The movie is a visual for the music he makes and the message he is trying to send out, he wants the government to do more for young people and he has experienced it. It is effective in promoting his music and movie and this is synergy because they are both linked. It gives him more recognition and also more intelligent and an older audience watch the Jonathon Ross show so this expands the target audience.

Plan B feels that the kids in his high school are disadvantaged as the kids haven't been raised properly and no one shows them love, they feel like they're not worth anything and then they walk out of the doors of their high school, pick up the newspaper and the media's saying they're not worth anything, the media calls teenagers chavs and scum. The society read the newspaper and they believe kids are bad so when they come across a teenager they already have a preconception about them this then leads to the teenagers believing they're not worth anything. Plan B then speaks about the riots, he believes the government haven't done anything to prevent it, Plan B shows true dislike towards the government.

E-Media:

Social networking site links are on the ill manors website and this is an opportunity for fans to keep up to date with what’s happening. They can see what Plan B has released and what he has done recently, also it keeps them with what’s happening with ill manors. The film is being promoted on the web and social networking is cheap, easy and quick to spread the message. This is effective also because the target audience use this medium a lot and they would come across it when on the web. And also they can give fans links for videos or exclusive footage and this would make them more popular they could also make competitions for the audience. This will help them with their marketing plan and this expands to the target audience because it is appealing. The audience can also interact with the actors or Plan B and this is what fans want this also gets them more recognition online.

Plan B

Audience

I would say the age group of this audience would be 16- 24 year old. Because they would eat out at these stores and they would purchase these types of products. Because they are new and cheap products so foe that reason young people would. Also they keep up with technology and modern day products. Also the music they listen to is mainstream and they try to keep up with trends. they are also quite restricted with their money because they might not have a lot of money so they cant buy the best brands.

The psychographics group would be mainstreamers and explorers because these would be the two groups young people would fit into and can relate to. Young people want to be different and try something new, so for that reason they would be explorers. Also they would be mainstream to try and fit in a group, because they copy other people. They also want to stay with the current trends in society so for that reason they are Mainstreamers.

Plan B talks about where he gets the inspiration for his music and his ideas. He says it is based on real life stories and the situations he has been through. Also he talks about the people he has met and his childhood heroes Rolf Harris being an example ‘When Rolf Harris came up to me after my speech at the Ivor Novellos in 2011 [Drew spoke about the adversity he’d faced during his rise to fame]. He had tears in his eyes and he said, “What you said up there inspired me to want to write songs again.” I said to him, “This is so f*cked up! I remember watching you draw cartoons when I was four – you haven’t changed. I feel like you’re my granddad because I’ve known you my whole life.” He did act like my granddad later that night. We had a photo together and as I never smile in pictures, he was telling me, “Come on, smile! Show your teeth!” I did smile in the end. He’s Rolf f*cking Harris – I’ve got to do what he says. You don’t say no to Rolf.’  He also explains the situation with making his album and he was stuck in the studio for 6 weeks and he survived ion Vodka and Redbull. And he rushed three of his tracks but he says he finished the day before the release date.

Plan B talks about how he has changed his diet and his lifestyle, he is trying to be healthier and is cutting down on the alcohol. He also changed his genre of music to rap because he feels he down the soul album to catch attention. He said it is a big achievement for him to win a MOBO but winning two is very special. He has been nominated a few times but has never won anything but this makes him recognise that he is doing well. He knows that his hard work is being recognised and it motivates him to carry on.

Underneath the album image, there's information about the album, the release date which is important as I mentioned above, the producers which brings many fans, people who like Plan B's other albums or even what he raps about and people who are a fan of Labrinth and his music. The Label which is Atlantic which again could attract a wider audience as many people might like that label because of it's previous work.

The website speaks first about Plan B's other albums, his last album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" was a soulful, if slightly hammy, concept album, which made Ben Drew a commercial success. It then speaks about his second album which is a "compliment" to the film Ill Manors. The website explains how both the film and album tell a story of a group of young people living next to the "billion-pound Olympic village in almost indescribable depravity.
The last paragraph, where should you listen to the album? the website explains if you've been through what Plan B's been through then you shouldn't listen to it as obviously it would upset you however Plan B says how it doesn't matter because all music should make you think.

ill manors website

The Ill Manors website includes many features that attract the target audience; they have links to social networking sites. Firstly the website attracts the target audience very well by the colours, font, and how there are options for the audience to explore the website of their choice. There are institutions at the bottom of the website which gives some details of what they done in the movie and what input they had. This is useful on a website as the audience would like know what company the film was made by and they would check past movies produced by them. The font at the top of the websites sells its product by informing the audience to download or buy the film, this attracts the audience as the font is in large, bold print and stands out from the website as it is white and the background is black. The colours used in the website are mainly black and white, dark which connotes dull, and may suggest mysterious or crime, the low key lighting used also suggests darkness, evil which may be one of the characters personalities and create enigma codes to the audience of what the film is going to be about. However the characters portrayed in the website do have some colour on them to make them stand out more also to attract the audience that these are the main characters especially the characters who seem to be standing in front look like the characters the audience should most focus on.

When you enter the Ill Manors website it catches your attention because the layout is very unique, it is set out like a magazine and makes it modern. The website contains the actor’s faces in the background and the display of the trailer as soon as you get into the website. The website also contains their Facebook and Twitter links which will enables the audience to keep up with the film through social network; this is also good for that target audience. The Website also contains videos of the making of Ill Manors. This attracts interest as audience will see the setting of the Ill Manors and also see how it is being made. The website also provides links to where the DVD can be purchased from and in what forms. I believe the strongest part of the website is the links, which provides the audience with quotes and views celebrities and famous people have on the film. I believe if someone sees someone they look up to praising the film they will watch it as they look up to them. The website also using synergy (cross promotion) to advertise the Ill Manors album. There is a link of the website providing the album and where is can be purchased from. Plan B is promoting not only his film on the website but also his music.

Ted x lecture

What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies?

He believes that the government doesn’t support working class people and this has an effect on young people because they feel alone and the world is against them. Hel also believes that the government doesn’t really care about children from a broken home and they just put them in care homes to resolve it. And they don’t support the families which are struggling but complain when those young people get into crime and drugs. They also put the parents on benefits and this doesn’t help them and it is hard to keep a family working and eating right without money. Also the government helps out and agrees with educated and wealthy people and can’t relate to the issues of the working class. His values are that the government hasn’t done enough for young people and broken families and they could do way more. They are making themselves enemies and this creates a bad relationship with them. And they turn against authority, also schools just get rid of students that are like this and don’t support them well enough. Young people are misguided and take the wrong path, because they don’t have someone to look up to. So this is why the join gangs because they feel they are part of a group and they are being protected. He thinks that young people are alone and you have to work hard yourself if you want to get somewhere. But you need support and help to go on the right path and achieve something good with themselves.

Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

The target audience would be a variety of people because Plan B is trying to make upper class and educated people what is happening. Also politicians to make them realise what is happening and what they could do to support those families. Also it the victims could be the audience to make them know that they aren’t alone and that many people in the country suffers and need support. And they could help themselves after the government gives them some support. Also young people which are in this situation and he is saying that they can amount to anything they want. Because he has been successful and he is willing to help out young people that are into music and are troubled, so they understand the positives. And he is giving them a future other than crime and they should think positive. I know this because of what Plan B says in his lecture and the points he makes are for those individuals, also the vocabulary he uses is mainly understood by educated words.  I think his music audience changes a little and it would be younger but an older generation would listen to it. They would listen to the lyrics closely so they understand what is happening and what he is trying to say. Also if they want to know what young people are into and what issues they have at that time. I think the physiographic groups would be reformers and struggles because of the characteristics they have. Reformers are social conscience and they care about other people, also they care about others and learn about other people’s lives.

What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

He says that the media is usually inaccurate and they have a negative on young people. They are quick to mention the negatives on young people but don’t mention the positives, they also twist the stories to make young people look bad. So for this reason it is hard for young people to feel the government is with them. Because they are always getting a negative look, also it makes the public believe this and be wary of young people. And all young people aren’t the same but the media creates a moral panic. And they say all hoodies are bad and up to no good, so the public believe the public and are scared when they see a young person with a hoodie. This also makes the public wary of young people and they will call police if they see a group of them standing in a corner. The media has made the public think that young people are plotting and are always up to no good. The media has created a negative stereotype about young people and it is hard to change this.
